Michigan British Reliability Run

Drive Around Lake Huron September 25-26, 2004

Benefiting the American Diabetes Foundation

By Bill Black

What a ride, so much scenic beauty, all in two days!  Forty four cars participated in this rally which covered 820 miles.  The route started in Sarnia, going through the Bruce Peninsula to Tobermory, taking the ferry to Manitoulin Island, and ending the first day in Thessalon.  Sunday took us over the bridges of Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinac, to Presque Isle Lighthouse, and a finish in Port Huron.  Forty three of these British cars, most built between 1948 and 1975, made the distance.  With some preparation, you can count on these vehicles to go anywhere.

You could call it a rally or stunt, depending on how you view my 45 year old MGA roadster built in England, but the trip was easier and more comfortable than expected.  One of the three cars from Ann Arbor was a 1948 MG TC driven by Peter Pleitner, the oldest of the whole rally, along with a 1965 Triumph TR4 driven by Dean and Elizabeth Mericas.

This event was also a fundraiser, with over $30,000 donated to the American Diabetes Association and Canadian Diabetes Association, depending on the donor's address.  Money going to the ADA will support the summer camp Midicha, located in Fenton, Michigan, for children (ages 8 to 17) who have type 1 diabetes. Some need financial help in order to attend a setting where their daily effort in managing their disease does not make them feel isolated.  Our great appreciation and thanks go out to all those who donated to this cause.
